GIMP for Unix-like systems

1. GIMP is free software, it doesn't put restrictions on the kind of work you produce with it. What's the GIMP 's license, and how do I comply with it?¶ GIMP is distributed under terms of General Public License v3 and later. In a nutshell, this means: You are free to use GIMP, for any purpose; You are free to distribute GIMP.
2. So I have Windows Vista and Google Chrome on my laptop. For some reason every time I try downloading GIMP, I cant even open the file to let me click Install. (As you can see, I know nothing about computers.) I really really need to download GIMP. If you could help me by giving me a step by step process on how to install it, that would be great. Oh, and i installed it on my desktop before it.

It has many capabilities. Can be used as a simple paint program, a program for professional photo retouching, as a batch processing system online, a generator mass of images to produce an image format converter, etc. Download Gimp user manual. GIMP is expandable and extensible. You can use GIMP both to retouch images and to create new ones. The app's tools include a brush, pencil, clone pad, and airbrush. GIMP's features are virtually the same as those of any current image editor: layer system, alpha channels, operation history, selection and transformation tools, masks, gradients, and so on. GIMP will also have a good go at opening a vast number of file formats, and you can add functionality and assorted features via a range of plug-ins that changes all the time. If available, the official package from your Unix-like distribution is the recommended method of installing GIMP!

The flatpak build is new and has known limitations, though it will likely provide faster updates, following GIMP releases closely.
Therefore choose your installation medium according to your needs.

Flatpak build available in: i386, x86-64, ARM and AArch64.

Yet it may not work out-of-the-box on some platforms since the flatpak technology is new. If that is the case, ensure flatpak is installed and if clicking the link still does not prompt to install GIMP, then manually install by command line:

flatpak install https://flathub.org/repo/appstream/org.gimp.GIMP.flatpakref

Once installed, it will be made available exactly the same way as other applications (menus, desktop overview, or any specific application launch process used by your desktop).
If this is not the case, we suggest to report a bug to your desktop or distribution asking for proper support of flatpak. In the meantime, you can still run it by command line (not as the recommended method, only a workaround):

flatpak run org.gimp.GIMP//stable

This installation will also provide regular update. You don't have to come back on this page and install again (it will not work!) when a new version of GIMP is released. Instead if your distribution and/or desktop has a good support for flatpak, it should propose to perform updates.
Once again, if your distribution does not have proper support, you can always fall back to using the following command line:

flatpak update

GIMP can also run on Solaris and is available for the BSD family of systems such as FreeBSD and OpenBSD.

Note: the currently available package provides GIMP 2.10.14 and has not yet updated to the latest version, GIMP 2.10.18. We're working on that, please check back later.

Native build

Macports

An easy way to compile and install GIMP and other great Free software on your Mac is by using Macports. The installer allows you to choose from a large directory of packages. To install gimp using Macports, you simply do sudo port install gimp once you have Macports installed.

Last we checked, the GIMP port file pointed to the current stable release and we have reports from people who've built GIMP successfully this way.

Homebrew

Homebrew is similar to Macports and provides packages (aka formulas) to install, either by compiling them from source or by using pre-made binaries. How to speed up imovie on ipad. There are indications that there is now a formula for GIMP, installable with: brew tap homebrew/cask && brew cask install gimp.

NOTE! Please be aware that it was announced recently that Homebrew is using analytics. To turn this off in homebrew then run: brew analytics off

Fink

Fink is a package repository that offer mostly precompiled binaries. It provides the apt-get command known to e.g. Debian and Ubuntu users, and installing GIMP is as easy as sudo apt-get install gimp once you have installed the Fink installer.
If there's no binary package, then fink install gimp will compile GIMP from source.

Disclaimer: we haven't been able to determine if it is possible to install or build recent GIMP from Fink. Last we checked, GIMP 2.6.12 appears to be the most recent GIMP package that is offered there.

GIMP is one of the best free image editing tools that you can get on Windows 10. It packs in a bunch of amazing features that allow you to do everything from remove backgrounds from images to use layers to add multiple components to any image. One of the best things about using GIMP is that it makes use of the FreeType 2 font engine that includes support for a variety of different fonts that you can add to your image.

And while you can easily get font packs from a variety of different sources on the web, you might find it difficult to install them in GIMP. So if you've want to use third-party fonts in your images, you've come to the right place. In this article, I'll show you how you can easily install fonts in GIMP to use them in your projects.

How to Install Fonts in GIMP on Windows 10

So the first thing you need to do is download third-party fonts for GIMP. Websites like dafont and wfonts are great resources where you can find a variety of different fonts for the platform. If you like a few peculiar ones but don't know their names, then you can use Chrome extensions to identify the fonts.

To download a new font, just head over to one of the free font websites and click on the download link.

Once you have the file on your system, just follow these simple steps to install the font in GIMP:

Step 1: Double-click on the zip file to open it.

Step 2: Then extract the files within by clicking on the Extract button in the file archiver of your choice. Or if you're just using the stock File Explorer, you can drag and drop the files to the location of your choice.

Step 3: Right-click on the OTF or TTF file and then hover the cursor over Open With to show all available options.

Step 4: Select Windows Font Viewer from the following drop-down menu.

Step 5: Click on Install in the top right corner of the Windows Font Viewer to install the font.

That will install the font in Windows, which means that any program that makes use of OTP or TTF fonts (including GIMP) will be able to make use of it.

Step 6: Open GIMP and select the Fonts tab in the toolbar to the right. Then search for the font you just added.

Step 7: If the font doesn't appear, you can click on the tiny tab configuration button in the top-right corner and then select Rescan Font List from within the Fonts Menu.

The newly added font should now appear in the list. Alternatively, you can also right-click anywhere within the list to bring up the Rescan option, or you can just click on the green refresh arrow at the bottom of the list.

However, there's a chance that the font still doesn't appear in the list. If that's the case, then you'll need to add it to the GIMP fonts folder manually. Here's how you can do that:

Step 1: Copy the TTF font file you want to add to GIMP by using the Ctrl+C shortcut.

Step 2: Navigate to the fonts folder.

Step 3: Paste the font file there using the Ctrl+V shortcut and grant administrative permissions.

After the font file is copied, reopen GIMP and refresh the font list. The newly added font should now appear in the list.

The best part about using this method to install fonts in GIMP is that it allows you to install multiple fonts at the same time. You just need to copy all the TTF or OTF files and paste them within the folder mentioned above. Simple, isn't it?

Try New Fonts in GIMP

Following the methods mentioned above, you'll be able to easily install and use just about any font in GIMP. But make sure you use the right font for your project, as they have the power to make or break your design. The fonts often remind me of Gary Hustwit's documentary — Helvetica.

You can also check posts on font psychology to learn how fonts inspire the logos. After that, I'm sure you'll be able to find something that fits your design's aesthetic. And in case you can't find anything, please refrain from using Comic Sans unless you're using it ironically. Anything else, but that.
